About us

My name is Jimmy and I’m on a mission to give you simplified and actionable survival and prepping advice.

If you are new and would like to get started on your journey today, check out our Getting Started Page.

Mixed Crafts started with one goal in mind – that is to make emergency survival information available to everyone. Now, trust me – prepping advice is everywhere, but it will always seem unorganized and messy.

I wanted to create something that was different – something clean and simplified. I made a commitment to making sure our advice can be followed by regular people with busy lives.

Bringing you the most up-to-date emergency preparedness information is my commitment to you. Furthermore, you’ll also be presented with sound, professional, and unbiased advice while reviewing products. I have gathered this information from expert sources, and my sources will be backed up scientifically. This, my friends, is what I feel “We, The People” need and most importantly deserve.

My Story

I grew up not really giving too much thought about Survivalism or any type of imminent doomsday survival situation. Overall, I’d say that I have had a pretty normal and average childhood. It wasn’t until I went to college that I actually began to pay attention to current events and news around the world.

Again, I led the average life, and my college career came to an end. I started my career in Mechanical Engineering, married the girl of my dreams, and had three kids. Then the unthinkable happened which changed my life and millions of Americans – 9/11.

I turned on the TV and as clear as it was, it seemed like I turned on the Twilight Zone. I hold my wife and children as we watch and wait for news updates. “This is unbelievable! This can’t be real!” I thought, as the news continued with one of the towers burning.

There was utter confusion going on in my mind. My mind raced, “Was this an accident?!? This has to be an accident!” Then tragedy strikes as the second plane ignites into the second tower. The moment was permanently burned into my memory.

It was completely silent in that house.

Reality Check

This, my friends, was the beginning of a complete change I had on my outlook of life.

Unfortunately in this case, the evidence was clear and somewhat frightening – tragedy can strike anywhere at any moment’s notice. This is reality folks.

The Awakening

So some years go by and my prepping journey had already begun. Luckily we are fortunate enough to have a good handful of avid doomsday preppers in the family.

Now, if you met a few of my cousins, you might consider them a little quirky. They aren’t wearing tin foil hats (in front of me anyway!), but I wouldn’t put it past them. Either way, they mean well, we love them to death, and they are the reason my family is alive today.

At this point in my life, I wouldn’t have even considered myself a “doomsday prepper” or anything like that. But, with the help of family members, we were set on what they considered the bare minimum. A few buckets of dehydrated food and a few cases of water seemed like more than enough.

Never Underestimate

All was calm and we didn’t think anything of the news. There was a storm coming, but we’ve been through multiple over the years.
The reality was that we didn’t even stand a chance as Hurricane Katrina ripped through our town. The flooding cornered us into the attic which forced us to abandon the dehydrated food and water I had purchased. Holding each other, we hunkered down and prayed as the storm passed. When things settled, I looked for supplies, only to find they were all damaged except for a few water bottles.

Our supplies that were supposed to last us for days were wiped out in seconds!

This was all directly related to the lack of emergency preparedness we made as a family.

We were hanging on by a thread at this point. Then by some kind of miracle, we hear a motorboat. A man in his lake boat was going around picking people up from their roofs.

I made a decision from that day forward to never let this happen again. I know I can’t stop Mother Nature, but after all is said and done, I could have been prepared for her. Lack of care for prepping and pure ignorance could have costed my family their life.

In 2016, there were 15 weather and climate disaster events with losses exceeding $1 billion each across the United States. These events included a drought event, 4 flooding events, 8 severe storm events, a tropical cyclone event, and a wildfire event. Overall, these events resulted in the deaths of 138 people and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted.NOAA
Today’s modern lifestyle is moving so quickly, and our fast-paced environment leave us with little time at all. You can rest assured that you will be provided with a single place to get all the emergency preparedness advice you need. This information will be laid out without all the confusion that you might find elsewhere.
It is awesome that there is so much information out there in regards to Survivalism. But, believe it or not, it is absolutely incredible on how much false advice is out on the internet. Here at Mixed Crafts, I have set out some clear principles that we strive to abide by to avoid all the garbage.

What We DO

Simplify complex survival advice
Give realistic expectations
Write for real everyday people with busy lives
Use scientific evidence to back our advice

What We DON’T Do

Tell you something that doesn’t work
Make you buy expensive or unnecessary products
Give favorable reviews to companies that pay us

Picking Up The Pieces

It’s been over 10 years since that storm destroyed almost everything we had. I say almost because at the end of the day, the thing that we will always have is each other. Family is by far the most important thing in life. And as far as I’m concerned, that right there is priceless.

My name is James “Jimmy” Rourke and my family has been non-stop prepping for over a decade now. The events that took place over the years have molded us into who we are today. However you want to look at it – fortunately or unfortunately – we are a product of our environment. Our family paid the price – that is certain. Now I am blessed with such a peaceful feeling knowing my family is safe and will always be prepared for any situation.

I challenge you to take the steps needed today in order to receive peace of mind for your family tomorrow.

I wish you all the best on your prepping journey.
Stay safe and take care.
Very Respectfully,

Jimmy Rourke
